What is joan e. donoghue?

Joan E. Donoghue is an American lawyer and judge who currently serves as a judge on the International Court of Justice. She was born on August 12, 1956, in Providence, Rhode Island, and received her undergraduate degree from Brown University and her law degree from the University of Virginia.

Donoghue began her legal career as a clerk for Judge Dever on the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit. She subsequently worked as an attorney for the Office of the Legal Adviser at the U.S. Department of State, where she specialized in international law and served as deputy assistant legal adviser for treaty affairs.

In 2007, Donoghue was appointed to the International Court of Justice by the United Nations General Assembly. She is the second woman and the third American to serve on the ICJ, and her term on the court runs through 2024.

Donoghue has also served as a member of the Inter-American Juridical Committee and as a consultant to UNESCO and the World Health Organization. She has written extensively on international law and has taught at several universities, including Georgetown University Law Center and the University of Virginia School of Law.
